Devanie Sookra

Law Clerk

Devanie is a law clerk with the Jagan Law Firm in the Queens office and is currently a law student. Devanie is deeply committed to helping immigrant families, advocating for children affected in divorce cases, and giving back to her community. Devanie happens to be one of the firms fist ever hirers when she began as a legal receptionist. Devanie worked for the firm in all different roles becoming the go to person for everything firm related including training new employees. We begrudgingly said farewell to Devanie as a full time employee when she left for law school to follow her dream. She has since returned during the summer to assist the firm as a law clerk.

Devanie received her Associate’s Degree from Borough of Manhattan Community College in December of 2019, and then she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice at John Jay College of Criminal Justice- CUNY graduating in May of 2020.

Devanie is currently completing her Juris Doctor Degree at New York Law School.

A Little Bit About Devanie

Devanie’s journey in the legal field began when she boldly walked into the firms Queens location in 2017 to inquire about an internship which turned into a job offer as a legal secretary. She was a college freshman at the time with a dream of becoming an attorney to help her community. Devanie served as legal secretary for four years then advanced to a paralegal role where she focused on Marriage Based Adjustments, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) cases, Uncontested Divorces, and many pro-bono Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Renewals.

Devanie has aided the firm from early days to present, she has witnessed client cases come full circle and has been a guiding light to many. Devanie has the ability to take on challenges with a level head and her communication skills are excellent making her a beloved figure in the firm.

Through her experience working at the Jagan Law Firm for over six years – interacting with clients, witnessing firsthand how children and families are affected, and drawing from her own immigrant background – Devanie fell in love with the law and helping people. Her passion for the legal field and her unwavering dedication to making a difference led to her apply to law school to pursue her dreams of becoming an attorney.

Devanie returned to Jagan Law Firm for the summer of 2025 as a legal intern, where she prepared many clients for their interview, assisted attorneys with signing up and finalizing cases, drafted various documents, and attended immigration interview with the attorneys to observe and hone her skills.

Devanie will continue to clerk with the Jagan Law Firm while she completes her degree, and we hope she returns to the firm as an attorney to practice family and immigration law when she completes her schooling.

Words From Devanie: “People will try to deter you from accomplishing your dreams, but always remember why you had those dreams in the first place. Stay committed, and do not ever let anyone tell you cannot do something.”

Fun Fact: Devanie is the first child, grandchild, great grandchild, and first college graduate and law student in her family.
